This is a collection of solved problems for the textbook Vibrations and Stability: Advanced
Theory, Analysis, and Tools, 3rd ed., Springer, 2021.
I believe in “learning by doing”. Even a most careful study of the solutions will not bring
up the analytic and physical insight, efficient working habits, motivation – and perhaps even
fun – that is gained by working out the problems on your own. I urge you to consider the
struggling and frustration associated with problem solving as an integral part of acquiring difficult
skills. And to employ the suggested solutions only for comparison, or as a last resort
when getting ultimately stuck.
I thank Prof. Pauli Pedersen for providing some of the problems from a former DTU course
Dynamic Stability, and a great many enthusiastic and ambitious former students for critical
comments and suggestions.
This edition corrects some errors and typos of the previous edition. Still, your error reporting
– preferably by e-mail to me – will be highly appreciated. If in lack of time for solving a
particular problem, then please at least check the suggested solution for errors.
